Baxter Memorial Library is currently accepting applications for a Library Assistant in Youth Services.

Job Status: Part-Time
Rate of Pay: $18.36 – $26.95

Details: Applications will be reviewed as they are received and position will remain open until filled. 

The Library Assistant in Youth Services performs a variety of routine paraprofessional and clerical duties in a busy environment under the direction of the Youth Services Librarian. The Library Assistant establishes and solidifies patron relationships by providing excellent customer service to diverse patrons of all ages, including extensive interaction with children and teens in particular. The Library Assistant will help provide targeted year round programming for the families of Gorham in the area of early literacy through the “Littlest Learners Literacy Program”, with emphasis on serving the families of children ages birth through age 5. Work is varied in nature and may involve working evenings and weekends. Hours are primarily 9am to 1pm with at least one 4 to 7pm shift.

Funding for this position is approved annually by the Town Manager and School Superintendent per the Memorandum of Understanding with Baxter Memorial Library for the Littlest Learners Literacy Program, which is contingent on an annual extension of the Memorandum of Understanding beginning July 1 of each year effective August 1, 2019 and the annual budget approval processes for the Gorham School Committee and Gorham Town Council.

Compensation & Benefits
Regular part-time employees are eligible for earned vacation, sick time, and 13 paid holidays annually. Part-time employees also have access to participate in a 457(b) deferred compensation retirement plan and may choose to enroll in health, dental, vision, income protection, and/or life insurance at the employee’s expense.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Minimum Requirements – High school diploma or equivalent required. Associates Degree in a related field preferred. Prior experience working directly with the public in a customer-oriented position required. Prior experience working with children preferred. Any equivalent combination of education, training or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities will be considered.

Baxter Memorial Library is continually accepting applications for its list of on call, part time, Substitute Library Assistants to cover employees’ absences. These applications are periodically reviewed.

Ideal candidates are those looking to broaden their library experience and build valuable skills and relationships. Duties include providing excellent customer service while staffing the circulation desk in either Adult or Youth Services as assigned. Considerable contact with the public, both in-person and by phone is required along with effective communication skills. Prior experience working in or volunteering for libraries is preferred. Candidates with an equivalent combination of training and experience will also be considered.

The pay rate is $12.50 per hour.
