SUMMARY:Book Group: The History of Sound
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a discussion of The History of Sound by Ben Shattuck \nA collection of interconnected stories\, set mostly in New England\, exploring how the past is often misunderstood and how history\, family\, heartache\, and desire can echo over centuries. In twelve stories set across three centuries\, the work examines the unexpected ways the past returns to us and how love and loss are entwined and transformed over generations. Each story has a companion story\, which contains a revelation about the previous\, paired story. Mysteries are revealed\, history is refracted\, and deep emotional connections are woven between characters and families.\nFree and open to the public\, all are welcome.

SUMMARY:What Real Planning Looks Like
DESCRIPTION:Too many families feel trapped by emergency care decisions. In this session\, Kaitlyn Cunningham Morse\, founder of Maine Aging Partners\, shares what “Second Retirement” is really about: facing long-term care with strength\, standing on your own terms\, and making choices before a crisis makes them for you. \nYou’ll see how long-term care actually works in Maine—and leave with the tools and confidence to define your choices instead of being defined by the system. \nWho This Is For: Anyone over 75—or caring for someone who is. \nKaitlyn Cunningham Morse is the founder of Maine Aging Partners\, a consultancy that helps families face long-term care with clarity and strength. She speaks widely about the idea of a Second Retirement—the stage of life after 75 when support needs rise and choices can’t be ignored. Kaitlyn is known for cutting through the promises to show families the truth about how long-term care really works—sharing her experience from the aging field in Maine so families can stand on their own terms with confidence.

SUMMARY:Writing a “Legacy Letter”: Sharing Your Values with Loved Ones
DESCRIPTION:An interactive workshop led by Jay Sherwin. \nA legacy letter (also called an “ethical will”) is a written document that allows you to share your life lessons\, express your values and transmit your blessings to future generations. A legacy letter is not a formal legal document or a full-length memoir; it’s a brief personal statement\, typically just a few pages. Writing one is a rewarding experience that creates an enduring gift for your family\, friends and loved ones. \nThis workshop is designed to introduce the concept of legacy letters and to help you craft your own legacy letter. It includes discussion and brief writing exercises. Jay will offer advice to help you complete your legacy letter\, share it with loved ones and preserve it for future generations. \nJay Sherwin has practiced law\, given away money for five charitable foundations and served as a hospital chaplain. Drawing on all those experiences\, Jay created the Life Reflections Project to educate people about legacy letters and ethical wills; he now teaches classes and workshops on legacy writing and helps people create their own legacy documents. You can read more on Jay’s website at http://www.jaysherwin.com.

SUMMARY:Book Group: By The Fire We Carry
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a discussion of By the Fire We Carry by Rebecca Nagle. \nA powerful work of reportage and American history that braids the story of the forced removal of Native Americans onto treaty lands in the nation’s earliest days\, and a small-town murder in the 1990s that led to a Supreme Court ruling reaffirming Native rights to that land more than a century later. Before 2020\, American Indian reservations made up roughly 55 million acres of land in the United States. Nearly 200 million acres are reserved for National Forests–in the emergence of this great nation\, our government set aside more land for trees than for Indigenous peoples. In the 1830s Muscogee people were rounded up by the US military at gunpoint and forced into exile halfway across the continent. At the time\, they were promised this new land would be theirs for as long as the grass grew and the waters ran. But that promise was not kept. When Oklahoma was created on top of Muscogee land\, the new state claimed their reservation no longer existed. Over a century later\, a Muscogee citizen was sentenced to death for murdering another Muscogee citizen on tribal land. His defense attorneys argued the murder occurred on the reservation of his tribe\, and therefore Oklahoma didn’t have the jurisdiction to execute him. Oklahoma asserted that the reservation no longer existed. In the summer of 2020\, the Supreme Court settled the dispute. Its ruling that would ultimately underpin multiple reservations covering almost half the land in Oklahoma\, including Nagle’s own Cherokee Nation. Here Rebecca Nagle recounts the generations-long fight for tribal land and sovereignty in eastern Oklahoma. By chronicling both the contemporary legal battle and historic acts of Indigenous resistance\, By the Fire We Carry stands as a landmark work of American history. The story it tells exposes both the wrongs that our nation has committed and the Native-led battle for justice that has shaped our country.\nFree and open to the public\, all are welcome.
