DESCRIPTION:What is possible when two bird-loving people come together\, form a team\, and apply both their overlapping and unique skills to see the most bird species in Maine in one year? A tale of their record setting Maine big year for birders and non-birders alike! \nTwo friends\, Stacey Pazar Huth (a scientist) and Noah Gibb (an avid birder\, photographer\, and birding tour guide) embarked on a Maine Big Year and discovered how their team effort was a winning combination. What started as an occasional bird walk at the local marsh grew into the concept of their Integrated Birding Process and “The Experiment.” They combined top-notch birding expertise with remarkable strategic planning. The outcome resulted in a new state of Maine record of 332 species of birds seen in a calendar year! \nStacey Pazar Huth\, PhD\, holds a doctorate in chemistry\, and spent more than 30 years as a corporate leader and scientist.\nNoah Gibb has been a Mainer all his life. Noah has earned a solid birding reputation in Maine’s birding community for his keen visual and auditory bird identification skills\, calm demeanor\, and sense of humor.

SUMMARY:Jessie Dowling\, Gaucho Derby Competitor
DESCRIPTION:Jessie Dowling of Iron Ledge Farm in Whitefield returns for a presentation about another epically long and challenging horse race! The Gaucho Derby is a 500 kilometer\, multi-horse endurance race set over a 10 day period in Patagonia\, Argentina\, billed as the “Toughest Horse Race in the World.” Contestants carry their own tent\, food\, and other essential gear in saddle bags and receive resupply bags of food set along the course route. The course runs through some of the most rugged wild places in the world navigating through steep mountain passes\, down scree lined cliffs\, across bog filled valleys\, barren mesas\, and wild Patagonian steppe. The winds of Patagonia are epically strong\, and the weather can change in an instant from sun to hail. Jessie will be giving a presentation on what it was like training for and competing in the race.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a unique experiential art program and trip for all ages with Baxter Memorial Library!\n\nPresented in collaboration with the University of Southern Maine\, the Greater Portland METRO\, and the Portland Museum of Art!\n\nWe will start at the library with an introductory art appreciation lecture from USM Art Education Faculty Sarah Warshaw and Mary Ledue-Bell. Denise Beck of the Greater Portland Metro will follow with an overview of how to ride the bus. We will ride as a group on the METRO Husky Line to the Portland Museum of Art\, with free admission and a Museum Educator-led tour of the collections. Please register for this program: https://forms.office.com/r/aL0SY723h0\n\nImportant notes:*To participate in the trip\, you must be able to traverse up to half a mile at a time\, for nearly two miles of outdoor movement on this trip. We will be walking from Baxter to the bus stop at Water and Main\, and then from the METRO stop to the Portland Museum of Art. Each segment of the trip is just under half a mile.*You are responsible for your own bus fare. METRO fare is $2 for adults\, $1 for youth\, veterans\, and seniors. If the bus fare is a hardship\, please contact the library. METRO can accept cash\, bus passes\, or UMO app payments.*The lecture\, museum admission\, and museum tour are completely free.
